The Windsor Spitfires swept the Barrie Colts to punch their ticket to Brandon, Manitoba and the 2010 Memorial Cup, where they will defend the title they won last year.
The Colts put up a good fight, but in the end, from what I hear, the Spits were simply too deep, too talented, too experienced an opponent to overcome. Despite Alexander Burmistrov's best efforts, the Colts were swept by Windsor after what was a great run through the OHL playoffs.
So, that's two of the four slots now accounted for at the Memorial Cup: Brandon (host city) and Windsor. Still awaiting the winners of the QMJHL (Moncton Wildcats ahead 2-1 on Saint John Seadogs after losing last night, 6-4) and WHL ( Calgary Hitmen up 3-0 on Tri-City Americans)
Taylor Hall has a nice shot now to repeat as tournament MVP, adding to his many honors he's piled up during his OHL career.
Once we figure out who the four teams at the Memorial Cup are, I'll do a comprehensive roundup of the key draft eligibles on each of those clubs for you. If things hold up, we're looking at Hall, Cam Fowler (Windsor), Brandon Gormley (Moncton), Justin Shugg (Windsor), Matt McKenzie (Calgary), Marek Hrivik (Moncton), Mark Stone (Brandon), Michael Ferland (Brandon) off the top of my head and there may be others. I'll do the research and do my best to give you a solid tournament preview once we know who's officially in the dance.
Stay tuned and keep checking in on the blog...
