This week will determine whether the Leafs finish 29th, or manage to move up in the standings and leapfrog over Tampa Bay, Florida (Toronto is two points behind both) and anyone else within striking distance (four behind the Hurricanes and Islanders, five behind the Blue Jackets) .
By next Tuesday night, the 13th (not a lucky number) the lottery will be complete, and we'll know where Boston is picking in the 2010 draft.
Just a quick note-- should the Bruins finish out of the top-two (and I think Taylor Hall's sensational playoff performance is pretty much cementing the decision that whomever owns the top pick will use it on him), it's not the end of the world. Cam Fowler, Nino Niederreiter, Eric Gudbranson and Brandon Gormley would all be fine picks in that range- whether Boston chooses one of them at No. 3 or 4 or 5 overall. Would it be disappointing to lose out on Hall or Tyler Seguin? Yes. But as a Bruins fan, if you had known up front that trading Phil Kessel last September would net at least the fifth overall pick in June, you probably would have been more than OK with the deal.
Anyway- the Leafs are still in 29th as of today, but surging, while the Lightning and Panthers are tanking. We'll see where things stand in exactly one week.
